summery goodness: day 6

As Summer is dwindling, I find I must breeze through my last few summery goodness posts. Today I want to write about friends. Friends are not a seasonal thing, but I find that I tend to go out and do more with my friends during the summer.

There is nothing better than a close childhood friend. Before our lives get busy as teens and adults, we have uninterrupted summers to bond with our childhood friends. Going to the playground, swimming, and outings to the state fair are all things that we will forever remember doing with our friends.

It is so rewarding watching my own daughter grow relationships with her friends, and I look forward to watching this as the years and summers pass. Friends in the summer are summery goodness.

and it's a hot one...

...like seven inches from the midday sun. As I sit here, that line from this song comes to my mind. This is actually not a post about me, but rather my chickens who are outside braving the 104 degree day, while I sit in my sort of air conditioned house. It's so hot that the street looks like a ghost town, yet my 18 or so hens and pullets are out in the backyard panting. Poor girls. I have given them ice blocks in their water, sprinklers to cool off the rocks, fans, and let them all out into my vegetable garden just so they can find more shade. Yes, I love my chickens.

summery goodness: day 5

A walk in the forest is a wonderful thing. Even in our small town, life gets a little busy and noisy, and a trip to the woods is a welcome escape. We are lucky to live in a timber production area, which means we have close access to acres of trees. The downside is that sometimes we get attached to a specific plot of land, only to visit it and find it has been clearcut. Even so, new life stems from a cleared forest-wildflowers, insects, and berries thrive in the warm sun. Deer and elk spend their days grazing in the newly found grasses and shrubs. Trees are replanted, and if I someday have grandchildren, I will be able to share the growing forest with them.

A summery afternoon in the woods is bliss.

It's been a bit since my last post. The reason is that I have been out enjoying the summer weather, sights and smells. One of my favorite things about summer is that everything is in bloom. Our backyard turns from all green to a colorful wonderland. Here are a few of our very own blooms from our backyard cottage farm.
